Voluntary Testing Unit
HMP Rye Hill provides a number of Voluntary Testing Units (VTU). This facility offers support through teams of trained staff, Compass Drug Workers and frequent testing programmes to assist any prisoner who requests help to come off drugs and/or remain free from future usage. The VTUs are also for non-users within the population as studies have shown this mix of attitudes towards substance misuse works best.
Prisoners live in an integrated environment on these units; they are not separated depending on whether they are non-users, recent past users or wanting help to kick a current jail habit. There is both single and double occupancy.
All prisoners are required to sign up and agree to the VTU Compact in order to be accepted on the units. Failure to comply with their Compact will result in being brought before the VTU Board in order to assess whether the individual requires more specific help.
If, after this, the individual refuses to comply support may be withdrawn and he will be asked to leave the VTU. Drug testing frequency will depend on the level of risk and specific areas of concern.
Hastings Unit, as well as being a VTU, is also a healthy living unit where individuals are offered support in order to lead a healthier lifestyle.
