ABOUT HMP RYE HILL

HMP Rye Hill is a 660 bed category B training prison. (Includes 150 bed vulnerable prisoner unit).

Its philosophy seeks to "normalise" prison life to reflect life in the outside community as far as possible and to create an environment in which both staff and prisoners feel safe and causes of prison stress are minimised. Central to this philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. GSL's operating philosophy emphasises the need to treat prisoners with decency and respect and encourages staff to build positive, supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care.

GSL also aims to create a constructive prison regime through the provision of education, work and other programmes in order to best prepare people for re-integration into mainstream society.

Predominantly single cells, some shared cells and cells for the disabled.

The regime is based on 35 hours per week minimum of purposeful activity including work, training and education (including physical education), offending behaviour programmes, all linked to a system of earned incentives and privileges.

Incentives and Earned Privileges
HMP Rye Hill operates an incentives and earned privileges scheme with four levels: basic, standard, enhanced 1, and enhanced 2. Progression to the highest level is achieved by prisoners' sustained commitment to the prison regime, the sentence management process, and their participation in the voluntary drugs testing programme. Failure to comply in any of these areas leads to a review of their status within the scheme.

GSL have a single union agreement with GMB Union commercial service section which commits both parties to binding arbitration.

GSL is an equal opportunities employer and makes every effort to recruit from ethnic minority communities.
